Carson City, Nevada-based KEMET Blue Powder Corporation (KBP), Formerly Known as Niotan Incorporated

About Niotan

A premier smelter of sustainable, conflict-free, capacitor-grade tantalum powder. The KBP business model starts with tantalum ore that is sourced from a mine in the village of Kisengo, in the conflict-free Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The mine was among the first to adopt the new iTSCi standards of traceability and due diligence. The iTSCi’s system verifies and ensures that KBP's ore is obtained without benefitting armed factions in Central Africa. After the ore is mined, a facility in South Africa - with whom KBP has an exclusive supply contract - processes the ore into K-Salt, the required intermediary form for the purpose of manufacturing capacitor-quality tantalum. Finally, KBP’s manufacturing plant in Carson City processes the K-Salt into a high-grade tantalum powder that is used to create electronic capacitors.

When Niotan Incorporated became KEMET Blue Powder Corporation, the company instituted a standard of strict adherence to the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition and Global e-Sustainability Initiative (EICC/GeSI) Conflict-Free Smelter compliance program. At every step of the process, audits and vigilant oversight ensure that the materials being mined and processed are acquired and transported ethically. KBP's commitment to a closed and vertically integrated system advances the cause of providing a supply of socially sustainable tantalum powder for the electronics industry, an important ethical consideration in the increasingly connected world of the 21st century.
